SAUKARYAM - A PROJECT ON ONLINING CIVIC SERVICES
Project ‘ SAUKARYAM’ (meaning facility) is about delivery of
civic services online. The project is a first of its kind in the country and
provides most of the civic services in a user-friendly format by using
information and communications technology. The project recognizes that
information is government’s biggest equity and it’s important that
it uses it for greater public good. The project has helped the civic body throw
open the information relevant but currently shrouded into the public domain. The
utility driven website which this project has helped develop is very unique and
serves every need of the citizens who used to previously face great deal of
harassment at the hands of corrupt and insensitive bureaucracy. The project has
brought in transparency, accountability and speed of delivery and has helped
reduce their unnecessary movement to government offices. In a developing country
like India where the dependence of people on government is very high, the
project has helped better their lives immensely. One important feature of the
city website is it being dynamic in nature and based on an office system that is
fully computerised and is therefore updated instan-taneously and automatically.
Another first is it being multi-disciplinary in nature covering all aspects of
governance ranging from taxation to public works to city sanitation. It has
acted as a tool for uniting communities important for a diverse and fragile
nation as India.
